Veterans Victorious!

Suffolk Volleyball County Veterans won the Eastern Volleyball Federation Masters Tournament on Saturday with a solid performance winning all their games on the day.

The over 40's were selected from the Newmarket, Ipswich and Orwell clubs. A back injury early in the first match to setter John White (Newmarket) forced the squad into a re-shuffle of postions, but the remaining six players reacted well to win all their matches prior to the penultimate game. The draw set up a great finale with both Essex and Suffolk unbeaten going into their final head to head game.

Suffolk took an early lead with a string of excellent serves from Setter Chris Watson (Ipswich). Coach Pete Saunders (Newmarket) and Sean McCormack (Newmarket) adapted very well in their new positions after the reshuffle due to John Whites injury, and the two outside hitters, Pete Garratt and Steve Monutain (both Ipswich) won regular points taking Sets from their club colleague Chris Watson. Terry Barnes (Orwell) completed the solid team effort with an excellent middle hitter performance.

Once the lead was gained Suffolk looked comfortable and gradually extended the advantage until the final whistle confirmed the Suffolk side as tournament winners.
The only disapointment on the day was the absence of Vetran Captain Ron Ames (Stowmarket), due to an ankle injury sustained earlier in the week during the Suffolk Volleyball Association Cup semi-final It would have been fitting for the backbone of the County Scene to have collected the trophy.
