Mens Suffolk Cup
Wednesday - 4th November
v
Stowmarket
Newmarket at home to Stowmarket, 1st round of the Suffolk volleyball
cup.
Expected to be one of Newmarket's toughest games this season Stowmarket
duely arrived mob handed with plenty of reserves, Newmarket matched
this with a recent flurry of new players.
Newmarket started well and were able to stay just one or two points
ahead until Stow got into their stride and started to match and then
slightly better the home sides error rate and took the lead away. Despite
bringing on new face Fabio Stabile Newmarket trailed at the end of the
first set 25-19.
The second set again started well for Newmarket and another new face
made Tim Vitalis made his mark. Stow were never able to catch Newmarket
who were now playing some very quick and adventurous attacking plays,
as well as picking up a much bigger defensive percentage and managed
to level the sets with this one at 25-18.
In a similar way the third set was also fought point by point and stayed
very close, indeed forcing the game to be won by two clear points. Young
Keegan Ayre made a brief appearance along with Newmarket's other potential
young member Thomas Pinker and a nail biting set was closed out 26-24.
Newmarket now in a very confident and somewhat over confident mood disasterously
fell behind forcing captain Paul Freeman to call a technical time out
at 15-7 down. A mix of strong words and the chance to catch their breath
saw a dramatic change in the teams concentration. Taking the next few
points in at top flight pace Stowmarket stood frozen on court, and from
what appeared to be an unattainable position found themselves back on
level terms, and with the home side taking no mercy Stowmarket were
efficiently discharged and left floundering 25-19. This stunning display
saw Newmarket back to their best and with new recruits on the bench
healthy competion for places can only produce more winning performances
from a team that thrives on winning.
