Mens Spring Cup
Wednesday - 18th November
v
Spalding
Newmarket away to Spalding in the Cambridgeshire super league.
With Bloc party dropping out at the last minute Newmarket only had one
game to defend their unbeaten record in the super league.
A Spalding side boosted by some new talent and a home advantage on a
court painted very close to one wall took the early lead with Newmarket
finding it difficult to gel before Nik Mezanov blasted an attack through
4 to show Newmarket's intentions. However Spalding were able to hold
their nerve and sneak the first set win 25-23.
The second set saw Newmarket take the reins and reverse the roles, strong
blocking at the net with Paul Freeman and Charles reid saw just enough
balls roofed back into Spaldings three meter line and command the set
and win at 25-22.
With all things equalled and only one set to play for Newmarket found
themselves at the unfavoured end and following a reprimand from the
ref were pumped up and looking to win. The score stayed very level early
on but Newmarket were un able to capitalise on a few of Spalding's errors
and the early lead was undone. Some poor decissions from the setters
led to a few easy points fotr Spalding and an un recoupable lead and
took the set 25-19
