Mens Spring Cup
Wednesday - 18th November
v
Cambridge spring cup, 1st round at home Newmarket v RAF Wittering /
Cottesmore
What was being built up as a return grudge match for putting Newmarket
out of the cup last season fell a little flat when the visitors were
not the same team as when the sides had previously met but a team consiting
of players relativley new to the sport.
Played in a very friendly atmosphere with an unuasul number of home
fans Newmarket made two handling errors and fell 2 points behind before
regaining composure and then taking the lead. Points machine Fabio Stabile
hit points with every attack and a strong lead was soon established
for Newmarket and the set finalised at 25-12
Newmarket started better in the second set although with Peter Gale
coming on for Nik Mezanov and taking a little while to warm into the
speed of the game a few points were dropped and the set was slightly
closer at 25-14.
The final set again saw a strong start from Newmarket, Ben Child now
off court on reffing duties saw the return to a one setter system and
the opportunity to try a few more varied attacks. Defensivly Newmarket
were not over stretched and were able to deliver quality balls into
setter Rob Dovaston who then called the shots and pulled out some exiting
attacking opportunities through the outside power hitting zones and
the set closed out at 25-15.
Overalll a dominating performance from possibly the strongest side that
Newmarkt has ever had available and a taste of what should follow in
future games.
